Osseous surgery helps to treat periodontal disease. Periodontis disease is a set of inflammatory diseases affecting the tissues around and supporting the teeth. It is a condition wherein a progressive loss of bone around the teeth is occurring. It will produce defect holes that are caused by microorganisms that are attached to each other and grow around the teeth surface. To avoid and treat this kind of gum disorder, some surgery is needed to be done in order to reshape the bone and that’s where osseous surgery is recommended.
Osseous surgery is done to correct gum disorders and help the gums to get rid of them by making the growth of the teeth in perfect shape. It will allow to eliminate gum pockets by removing the infected gum tissue and reshape the bone tissues.
Patients who are qualified to undergo osseous surgery need to have some basic periodontal treatment called root planning and scaling. This is not the typical way of cleaning the teeth with your dentist. Root planning and scaling is designed to heal and remove toxins as well as bacteria around the root surfaces of the teeth. Its removing of the toxins around the teeth allows the body’s immune system to have a fast healing process whenever surgery is done.
Osseous surgery is done by making the area for treatment to be completely numb by using anesthesia; or, any local anesthetic will do. The dentist will do the cutting of each tooth to be treated in able to take out the gum tissue from the bone. In this way, it is easy to have access to the roots of the teeth and bone within. The dentist can easily clean the surface and have the chance to reshape the bone around the teeth by using the drill and sharp hand tools. The bone can now be removed and restore the fall and rise of the bone by means of reshaping it. After the procedure, the gums are back to its place and enclosed by means of stitching and may be covered with a periodontal pack bandages or dressing.
After the osseous surgery, some medications could be taken. It is possible to have more sensitive teeth after the surgery; and because the teeth are more exposed, they may develop cavities in the roots that is why proper care is highly essential. Using mouth wash with chlorhexidine is recommended to use to remove plaque and kill bacteria that also helps for faster healing.
The patient may also experience some swelling of the gums after surgery. Swelling can be prevented and eliminated by applying ice pack on the face and taking antibiotics to get rid of infections. If in some case that the gums are causing some chronic pain, it is recommended to seek consult from your dentist and reexamine the treated area for a week or two. The patient should be more careful and be very cautious about his teeth to have a successful surgery, by tooth brushing at least two times a day and with daily flossing.
